Indiana Business Research Center

The IBRC of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University provides business and economic data, analysis, and services. The IBRC publishes periodicals interpreting data, as well as other commissioned reports or briefs. Two useful publications include IN Context, outputted monthly, and Indiana Business Review, outputted quarterly, which cover various mixtures of topics such as industry sectors or imports and exports.

This publication comes from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and features many articles on economic conditions on Indiana. Outlook for 2008, The International Economy, Financial Forecast, and various metro area reports are typical.

Indiana Economic Development Corporation

The IEDC provides numerous business aids, including information on what makes Indiana a good place to do business, site selection assistance, grants and incentives, tax information, workforce information, and various industry information.

Indiana Small Business Development Center

The ISBDC offers a lot of information to help small business, such as different resource and management guides, advice on starting and running a business, and more. Information is available either free or at low cost and is also available in Spanish.

Indiana University CIBER

The Center for International Business Education and Research at Indiana University offers assistance and support to the business community, among others, for international operations. Supports come in the form of Indiana Export Reports, Conferences and Workshops, Life Sciences Industry, Foreign Language Tutoring, and International Trade and IB Pedagogy resource links.

Indiana State Information:

Indiana is located in the northern section of the Midwest. The name Indiana means “land of the Indians,” referring to the many Native American inhabitants of the area. Its people however are known as Hoosiers, which is reflected in the state’s nickname, the “Hoosier State”. The origin of this nickname is disputed but has been enthusiastically adopted by Indiana residents, especially fans of University of Indiana athletics.

Indiana’s economy is based primarily on its strong manufacturing sector. The industry gained its roots from the mechanization of agriculture in the 19th century. In the early decades of the 20th century, steel-making was introduced, creating a base that allowed for the automobile manufacturing to gain a strong foothold. Today, Indiana possesses a diversified industrial base which is active in steel refining, tool-making, metalworking, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Contrary to the declining trend of manufacturing prevalent in many states, Indiana’s manufacturing output has grown steadily in recent years.

In addition to manufacturing, agriculture continues to contribute to the Indiana economy. Much of the state resides in what is called the Corn Belt of America, which stretches from Ohio to eastern Nebraska. Indiana is the fourth largest producer of corn in the nation, and ranks third for soybeans. Indiana’s agriculture industry is also noted for its pork production.
